Build your confidence and develop essential Excel skills with our three‑part interactive online workshop series. Designed to support you with using Microsoft Excel in your studies and assignments, this series is perfect for complete beginners as well as anyone who would benefit from a solid refresher in working with data, charts, tables and formulas.
Across three separate one‑hour sessions, you’ll learn practical techniques that you can apply directly to your studies, coursework and assessments. Each session will guide you step‑by‑step through core Excel features, helping you become more efficient and effective when handling data.

Session 1 – Microsoft Excel: Navigating, Managing and Formatting Data - 07/10/26
This session will be delivered by Hannah Ward from the Student Digital Skills team.
Start with the essentials of Excel and build confidence using spreadsheets in your studies. This session covers how to navigate the Excel interface, understand key menus, and format worksheets clearly and consistently. You’ll also learn simple ways to manage, arrange and tidy your data. By the end, you'll have a solid foundation for using Excel effectively in your day‑to‑day academic work.
Session 2 – Microsoft Excel: Formatting Tables and Charts - 13/10/26
This session will be delivered by Steve Cameron from the Student Digital Skills team.
Learn how to organise and present your data professionally using tables and charts in Excel. This session introduces table formatting, filters, sorting and total rows to help you analyse information efficiently. You’ll then explore how to build different types of charts, customise their layout and style, and create clear visualisations for reports and assessments.
Session 3 – Microsoft Excel: Formulas, Functions and Calculations - 23/10/26
This session will be delivered by Luke Kidger from the Student Digital Skills team.
Develop confidence using formulas and functions to perform calculations and automate your data work. You’ll learn how to use cell references correctly, apply common functions such as SUM, AVERAGE and COUNT, and work with conditional logic to analyse data. The session also covers useful text functions like CONCAT, LEFT and LEN to help you clean and combine data quickly and accurately.
